Healthy Pirandai Thuvaiyal / Veldt Grape Chutney



Health Benefits of Pirandai

Pirandai is an excellent medicine for all age people especially for women. Pirandai is used like a herb and is included in many traditional medicines, particularly in Ayurveda system for a long time. It is having powerful anti-oxidant, It is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory by nature. It also boosts the immune system. It reduces bad cholesterol, It is having high content of calcium which strengthens bone. When it is consumed regularly, it has the ability to reduce cramps and bloating caused during menstruation. It is also found that it can reduce the stress caused during menstruation. It is also known as veld grapedevil's backboneadamant creeper.

Ingredients:
  • Pirandai - 1/2 cup
  • Urad dal - 2 tsp
  • Red chili - 6
  • Small onion - 10
  • Garlic cloves - 3
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Tamarind - 1  lemon size
  • Grated coconut - 2 tsp
  • Salt - As needed
  • Sesame oil or ghee - 3 tsp 


For seasoning: (optional)
  • Sesame oil - 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig

Method:
Step 1: Cleaning Process
  • Grease your hands with coconut oil or sesame oil, Because pirandai will cause itching.
  • scrap or peel the sharp angular edges (all sides) and discard the nodes and leaves.
  • Wash and cut it into small pieces and set aside.
Step 2:
  • Heat sesame oil or ghee in a Kadai, Add urad dal, roast it until turns little golden. Remove from kadai and keep it aside.
  • Add red chilies, small onion, garlic, curry leaves, tamarind, one by one, saute until it turns golden. Add grated coconut, saute for 2 seconds,  Remove all the ingredients from kadai and keep it aside.
  • Now add Pirandai in the same kadai on medium heat until it turns pale green. Sauteing the pirandai well in oil is very important otherwise you will have itching in the throat .
  • switch off the flame and allow it to cool.
Step 3:
  • Add all the roasted ingredients, salt and  pirandai in a mixer, grind it little coarsely. transfer it to a bowl.
  • Pirandai thuvaiyal is ready.
  • For seasoning process, Heat oil in a pan, Add mustard seeds, curry leaves.  switch off the flame. pour it in the thuvaiyal bowl.
  • You can serve it with rice, idly, dosa.
Notes
  • The pirandai should be sauteed well otherwise it will be even itchy in your tongue.
  • Using a lemon size of tamarind will safeguard you from itching. 
  • Make sure to remove the sharp edges as well. The nodes and leaves  should not be included.
