Kongunad Special Dal Rice / Arisi Paruppu Sadam

Dal rice is very famous in Coimbatore and Kongunad areas. It is very simple and tasty dish for lunch boxes. Dal in this gives you enough protein. It is very healthy dish. When you eat it as hot it tastes yummy. The pepper, Garlic and ghee gives you excellent flavour.

Ingredients
  • Rice - 1 Cup
  • Toor Dal - 1/2 Cup
  • Chopped onion - 1/4 Cup
  • Tomato - 1 ( Chopped)
  • Curry Leaves - 1 Spring
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
  • Hing - 1/4 tsp
  • Green Chili - 2 Slit
  • Sesame Oil - As needed
  • Salt - As needed
  • Coriander leaves - Few
  • Garlic - 4 Cloves
  • Pepper - 1tsp
  • Sambar Powder - 2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Ghee - 2 tsp
Method:
Step 1:
  • Wash the rice and dal together, Drain water, Keep aside.
  • Heat oil in cooker, Add Mustard seeds, Curry leaves, Cumin seeds, pepper, one by one, Allow it to splutter.
  • Add green chili, Onion, Fry until it turns golden.
  • Add Garlic, Mix well, Add tomato, Mash well.Add turmeric powder, Sambar powder, Mix well.
Step 2:
  • Add hing, Mix well. Add rice and Dal, Add 3.5 cups of water.
  • Add salt, Allow it to 3-4 whistles.
  • Once pressure releases, open the cooker, Add ghee, Coriander leaves, Mix well.
  • Serve hot with potato fry, Chips, Papads... 
Notes
  • Adjust water if you need excess in your pressure cooker.
  • You can add veggies like carrot, beans with this.
  • Adjust whistles if it is not cooked.
