Madurai Special Kalani Rasam/ Kalani Pulisaru

Instead of eating regular dishes like sambar, rasam, variety rice. This is somewhat different but more tasty and easy to do.It will help in the busy morning routine. My Mom usually do this when she is having no time to cook. It tastes yummy than any other dish. People who like sour taste will definitely love this.Mostly in village, they prepare kalani pulisaru and serve with plain steamed rice. 

Ingredients
  • Tamarind - 1 Medium lemon size  
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Chopped Small Onion - 1/8 cup
  • Red Chili - 3
  • Curry Leaves - 1 spring
  • Fenugreek Seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt - As needed
  • Oil - 2 tsp

Method:
Step 1:
  • Take a Bowl, soak the tamarind in the water. Make tamarind pulp, Set aside. 
  • Heat Oil in a Pan, Add Mustard seeds, Curry leaves allow it to sizzle.
  • Add red Chili, Asafoetida, Fenugreek, allow it to splutter.
  • Add chopped small onion, Stir until it turns golden. Add turmeric powder, Mix well.
  • Now add tamarind pulp, little water, Salt in it. Allow it to boil for 5 mins, till it evaporates half of the quantity.
Notes
  • Adjust the tamarind water according to your tangy taste. 
  • No need to add any spice powder, red chili alone is enough for spiciness
  • You can use green chili instead of red chili.
  • serve with plain steamed rice and parupu thovayal. 
  • It will not be thick, it will be watery.
